Softphones, Staff Training and VoiP Issues Resolved

Is there a USB based headset training adaptor???

A couple of weeks ago, we were approached to supply training adaptors for use by staff using PC VoiP based softphones.  The prospect organisation was making calls, with special software, using consumer grade computer headsets connected to their computer workstations via USB.  They wanted to train their staff, to improve customer contact standards.

The manager was aware that, when using telephones, they could connect a basic training adaptor to the telephone to enable supervisors to listen in to their trainees’ calls.   The supervisor could even take control of the call, when the trainee really messed up, if they had Buddy training adaptors .  But, what could they do if their staff were using softphones?  They thought of USB hubs – surely one input, four (4) outputs would allow this.  Wrong!  USB technology does not allow sharing of USB connections.  What could they do?

Our technical team went into overdrive to find a solution.  They found that a solution already existed (but not in Australia).  British company S W Communications had adapted the Buddy training adaptor by adding a USB sound card. Eureka! A USB based training adaptor was developed.

You could not simply connect two USB based headsets together (remember USB technology will not allow this).  However, you could use two direct connect business grade headsets (similar to those used with the highly popular telephony Buddy’s). Plug these into the USB Buddy and you have USB based training.  You don’t even have to buy special headsets.

The USB Buddy has all the features of the traditional Buddy.  The supervisor can listen to the trainee.  The supervisor can be muted for a clear trainee conversation.  The supervisor can quickly take over control of the call, if necessary.  All this using standard wired Plantronics, Jabra and Sennheiser business headsets.  In fact it will work with ANY direct connect headsets.  It is even Plug & Play – no need for special computer drivers.

The USB Buddy is ideal for

  • offices or call centres,
  • distance training, with two teachers,
  • small VoiP conferences,
  • training staff,
  • two people participating in a Skype or other VoiP call,
  • Webinars.
